This module offers suggestions to instructors who are adapting a course taught in a traditional classroom or starting a new distance education course from the ground up. When designing a distance education course, instructors need to pay close attention to instructional design, content selection, interaction and evaluation methods.

The module is divided into the following sections:

  • Instructional Design : This section starts with instructional design issues (needs assessment, goals, objectives, learners) and ends with tips for designing course content and the initial steps to selecting the types of media you will use in your course.

  • Interaction: This section discusses the importance of interaction in a distance education course, the types of interaction that should be included in a course, and tips for encouraging course interaction, even with challenging delivery methods like videoconferencing and the web.

  • Assessment and Evaluation: This section covers a variety of assessment and evaluation strategies for use in a distance education course, including diagnostic, formal, and summative evaluations.
